SUMMARY:TopSoil Summit "Built for This"
DESCRIPTION:The TopSoil Summit is where farmers\, ethanol plants\, and ag partners come together to prepare for what’s next. \nWith 45Z underway and new opportunities emerging\, this is your chance to get ahead. At Continuum Ag\, we’ve been working for years to help farmers measure\, understand\, and improve their Carbon Intensity. Now\, it’s time to turn that work into an opportunity. \nCooper Reed\, ALSH Central Region RSM will be attending our booth! Stop by to say “Hi”!

SUMMARY:PFI Field Day: Diversifying a Row Crop Farm with Winter Camelina\, Oats\, Sunflowers and Cover Crops
DESCRIPTION:Scott and Dawn Lightly grow corn\, soybeans\, oats and sunflowers and are trying winter camelina and buckwheat on 360 acres near Oakland\, Minnesota. After more than 20 years of farming\, a light-bulb moment in 2013 led Scott to start using cover crops and reduced tillage. A few years later\, he began interseeding cover crops into his standing corn and has since noticed a big improvement in moisture retention and infiltration. \nAs marketing opportunities arose\, Scott and Dawn started extending their rotation with small-grain and oilseed crops. They are now exploring double-cropping to get two harvested crops from one field in a year. Come see how winter camelina and sunflowers are opening the door to new possibilities on the Lightlys’ farm\, with insights from Matt Leavitt of Forever Green Initiative and Anna Teeter of Cargill. \nA light meal will follow the field day.

SUMMARY:PFI Field Day: Overcoming Challenges and Finding Opportunities for Growth on an Organic Farm
DESCRIPTION:Bob and Sara Pearson grow organic corn\, soybeans and oats on their farm in Kossuth County\, Iowa. Sara started off with an organic vegetable farm in 2008 but gradually switched her focus to row crops as family rental acres became available. By 2015\, Bob and Sara decided to fully focus their energy on transitioning their acres to organic row crops\, choosing organic for its financial and environmental benefits. \nNow operating on 420 acres\, Sara and Bob have learned a great deal through years of organic transition and challenging weather years. Through it all\, their crops show resilience in the face of poor weather conditions and bad pest and weed years. Come see how they are working with nature to build soil\, retain water\, support beneficial insects and improve nutrient cycling. \nA light meal will follow the field day\, sponsored by Mad Capital.

SUMMARY:PFI Field Day: Organic Kernza\, Sunflowers and Oats: Seeding Financial Stability and Agronomic Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Central Iowa farmers Caleb Akin and Noah Wendt began farming together through their partnership\, A & W Farms\, in 2006. They began transitioning acres to organic in 2015\, drawn by the higher prices of organic crops. As they have continued to transition more of their acres\, Caleb and Noah have come to appreciate opportunities to grow niche crops and decrease reliance on external inputs. \nAs markets have become available\, Noah and Caleb have been able to grow crops beyond corn and soybeans\, such as oats\, sunflowers and Kernza. They also use cover crops and limit tillage whenever possible. Come to their field day to see their Kernza\, a perennial grain crop\, in its second season of growth. You’ll also see sunflowers growing for oil production and food-grade oats nearing or at harvest stage. \nA light meal will follow the field day\, sponsored by Mad Capital.

SUMMARY:Boosting a Farm's Resiliency Through Cover Crops and Crop Rotations
DESCRIPTION:Ross McCaw began planting cover crops in 2019 to try to reduce his nitrogen inputs. He’s taking part in a nitrogen reduction trial through PFI’s on-farm research program to document the results. In 2023\, Ross started planting a three-crop rotation to raise more rye for seed and get all of the benefits of cover crops. He added plant growth regulators to achieve a healthier rye stand for harvesting. After the rye comes out\, he drills in a diverse cover crop mix. Ross is partnering with his landlord to graze his 25 cattle in the fall and has added a grazing mix to the rotation in one of his fields. \nAt this field day\, you’ll see the diverse cover crop mix growing after the rye has been harvested\, and before the cattle graze it. We’ll also see a field planted in cover crops going into corn the following year. \nA meal will be served following the field day.

SUMMARY:9th Annual Midwest Mechanical Weed Control Field Day
DESCRIPTION:At the morning Expo/trade show you’ll see weeding tools and speak with company reps from manufacturers in the US\, Europe\, and Japan; connect with suppliers and buyers; and meet the farmers in attendance from all over the region. At the morning education sessions you’ll learn from experienced farmers and experts. \nAt noon\, the field day will break for lunch – an opportunity to network\, or continue looking at trade show equipment and speaking with exhibitors. In the afternoon farmers follow the tractors out to the demonstration fields\, where corn\, beets\, and brassicas have been planted especially for the demonstrations. The field demos are the heart of this event\, and MANY cultivation tools of all scales for row crops and vegetables will be demonstrated by company reps. Everything from camera-guided\, to autonomous robots\, to belly-mounted cultivators and cultivating tractors will be demonstrated in the field and explained by manufacturers. Participants are split into small groups for quality demo. These demonstrations will show how the machines should be mounted and properly adjusted according to crop and soil conditions\, and will help farmers visualize how the implements can work on their own farms. \nThis event is perfect for farmers and ag advisors who want to: see a particular weeding tool before buying it\, learn how to adjust cultivators\, see what is new in cultivation\, and learn from other farmers.
