Avondale is a short-growing, smaller-seed cool-season annual.
Lentils are best suited for semi-arid areas with cool, dry conditions. They are adapted to all soil types and can be a good option for cover crops in the Midwest, but do best on well-drained soils. They also tolerate salinity and higher pH soils.
Lentils have good tolerance to frost and drought. They will winter-kill in the Midwest.
Lentils are slow to establish, and do not suppress weeds well. They have good seedling vigor and can emerge through heavy residues.
Lentils prefer a lot of sunlight and fit in well to mixes with lower seeding rates. Plant height is around 14 inches tall and have good lodging resistance.
Lentils can be established in early spring or late summer. They tolerate cold soils well, will germinate at 40 degrees F, and winter-kill at 20 degrees F.
They are good nitrogen fixers and can also be used in forage mixes. Flowers are attractive to pollinators and plants are palatable for livestock.
