Avondale Lentils

Avondale is a short-growing, smaller-seed cool-season annual.

  • Lentils are best suited for semi-arid areas with cool, dry conditions. They are adapted to all soil types and can be a good option for cover crops in the Midwest, but do best on well-drained soils. They also tolerate salinity and higher pH soils.
  • Lentils have good tolerance to frost and drought. They will winter-kill in the Midwest.
  • Lentils are slow to establish, and do not suppress weeds well. They have good seedling vigor and can emerge through heavy residues.
  • Lentils prefer a lot of sunlight and fit in well to mixes with lower seeding rates. Plant height is around 14 inches tall and have good lodging resistance.
  • Lentils can be established in early spring or late summer. They tolerate cold soils well, will germinate at 40 degrees F, and winter-kill at 20 degrees F.
  • They are good nitrogen fixers and can also be used in forage mixes. Flowers are attractive to pollinators and plants are palatable for livestock.
  • Inoculate with Exceed Pea/Vetch/Lentil/Faba
  • Approx. 10,000 seeds/lb.; drill 30 to 35 pounds an acre alone and 5 to 8 pounds in a mix.
